Registering a Vessel in Cyprus: Key Requirements and Eligibility Criteria
Cyprus offers a well-established legal framework for vessel registration through the Registrar of Cyprus Ships under the Merchant Shipping (Registration of Ships, Sales and Mortgages) Law. Ships of various types and sizes may be registered under the Cyprus flag provided they comply with national legislation and international maritime standards, including the relevant certification requirements. However, certain restrictions apply, such as vessels banned by port state control authorities, vessels with repeated detentions, or ships used exclusively for inland navigation.
Ownership requirements are also an important element of the registration process. In general, the majority of a vessel’s shares must be owned by Cypriot or EU/EEA citizens, or by companies established in Cyprus or within the EU/EEA that appoint an authorized representative or entrust ship management to a qualified company based in Cyprus. These rules aim to ensure regulatory compliance, promote maritime safety, and maintain Cyprus’s position as a reputable international shipping centre.
