Cyprus and the Schengen Area: Key Developments and What It Means for Travel
The Schengen Area is one of the world’s largest free-movement zones, allowing passport-free travel across 29 European countries for over 448 million people. Non-EU nationals holding a Schengen visa can travel within this area without internal border checks, facilitating tourism, trade, and business mobility. Cyprus has long pursued membership in the Schengen system, viewing it as an important step toward strengthening economic opportunities and enhancing the country’s role as a regional hub between Europe and the Middle East.
Progress toward membership accelerated when Cyprus joined the Schengen Information System (SIS) on 25 July 2023, marking a crucial milestone in the accession process.
