Cyprus Advances Green Shipping Through Environmental Incentives
Cyprus continues to strengthen its position as a leading maritime hub by promoting sustainability within the shipping industry. The Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry has introduced environmental incentives encouraging shipowners to adopt greener practices and reduce emissions. Since January 2024, Cyprus-flagged and EU/EEA vessels that implement measures to lower their environmental impact may benefit from a reduction of up to 30% in annual tonnage tax, supporting shipowners in their transition toward more sustainable operations.
These initiatives align with broader international and European environmental commitments, including the Paris Agreement and the regulatory framework of the International Maritime Organization. Cyprus is also investing in greener port infrastructure and promoting the use of alternative fuels and energy-efficient technologies. Through regulatory measures, financial incentives, and innovation in port facilities, the country aims to support the global shift toward lower-emission maritime transport while maintaining its competitiveness in the international shipping sector.
